The very first and most important thing is to shut off the water AND drain the pipes. This includes the water heater. Unplug everything and leave the refrigerator doors open so it doesn’t get moldy. Shut off the gas, check the gutters, and turn that thermostat to 60 degrees. One of the best things you can do is check on your cottage periodically, so if you are unable to do so try asking a friend.
