Be a Cold-Weather Aficionado and Spend a Weekend Afternoon Skiing at Ken Reid Conservation Area

Ken Reid Conservation Area is a 110-hectare (272-acre) property that protects sensitive wildlife habitat, forests, meadows, and the provincially significant McLaren’s Creek Wetland, which borders Sturgeon Lake. Kawartha Conservation acquired the Ken Reid Conservation Area in 1980 and named the property after its previous owner, local farmer Ken Reid.
There are 12 interconnected trail loops that total almost 12 kilometres. Several of the loop trails allow you to circuit through the snow, surrounded by nature, as they wind through forests, meadows, and wetlands. For example, the Point Trail takes you through the forest's frosty terrain. The round-trip loop, which is almost three kilometres, follows a sinuous point that stretches out into Sturgeon Lake. Take in the view of the frozen lake in picturesque solitude.
A quiet skier may also catch a glimpse of a deer, fox, hare or other wildlife that inhabit the meadows and forests of this parcel of land. In fact, the conservation area is also a popular destination for birders.
The Victoria Rail Trail also intersects the conservation area. The trail, which stretches 55 kilometres from Lindsay to Kinmount, offers you another opportunity to don your skis and glide through the snow of deepest winter.
Pack your skis, head out to the Ken Reid Conservation Area, and enjoy the clarity of mind that comes from being out in the winter. Indeed, cold weather is a chance to find your own rhythm and your connection to the outdoors. Winter - just like spring - is an opportunity to begin a process of personal renewal and to reconnect with nature. No access is permitted outside of the posted hours
Amenities
Amenities include a playground, picnic shelters, a group camping area, an off-leash dog park, and a wetland-viewing platform called the Marsh Lookout
Parking
The northern section of the Ken Reid Conservation Area is closed to vehicle access from October 31 to May 1
Parking is available year-round across from the Kawartha Conservation Administrative Centre
Directions
The Ken Reid Conservation Area is about 3 kilometres north of Lindsay. From Highway 35, turn east onto Kenrei Road and travel 2.7 kilometres until you reach your destination or 277 Kenrei Road, which will be on your left. Kenrei Road can also be accessed from the north end of Angeline Street
