• Do you have a working smoke alarm on every level of your cottage?
• Do you check the batteries every month by pressing the test button?
• Do you vacuum the dust and debris out of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on a regular basis?
• Do you have a family fire escape plan?
• Do you practice it regularly?
• Can the numbers on your cottage be seen clearly at night?
• Do you have a second way to leave every room, especially upper floors, i.e. a garage roof or a fire escape ladder?
• Do you have a meeting place outside your cottage in case of a fire emergency?
• Is everyone in your household familiar with 911 (including when and how to use it)?
• Are all electrical outlets, appliances, and cords safely installed and used?
• Is the area surrounding the furnace and water heater - at least one metre or three feet - kept clear?
• Are all matches and lighters locked up or kept out of reach of children?
• Does everyone in your family know what to do if their clothing catches on fire? (Stop, drop, and roll)
• Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm installed near all of your sleeping areas?
