Birds are all around us, but how often do we really take the time to appreciate them? How many local birds could you identify? This family made it a challenge - writing down their sightings from June to Thanksgiving. What a great idea to get the whole family outside and learning all about nature! What kinds of activities do you and your family participate in outdoors?
Several years ago, with only the simplest of motives, I challenged my family, and any other cottage regulars to a bird-sighting contest. It was intended to be elementary-school level cottage fun. Whoever observed the greatest number of bird species over the cottage season would win a prize worthy of their efforts, which I would supply. I sometimes had difficulty myself distinguishing an eastern kingbird from Big Bird, so I hoped the contest would force me to elevate my own proficiency in the natural world. I hoped the same for my kids and for the other participants.
