Bovines Cherish Saturday Afternoons in the Kawarthas Too
Date: 09/17/2013
I pulled over to the side of the road to take a photograph, but by the time I got close enough, I had frightened the cows and they were back on their feet. Although I missed the charming snapshot of collective bovine behaviour, I did manage to take a few photos before the cattle ran away. Luckily, the cows became more comfortable with my presence. Nonetheless, it was a little disconcerting to have so many pairs of eyes fixed on me.
The Kawarthas has a strong history of agriculture, which is a mainstay of the regional economy. There are about 1500 farms in the Kawarthas, according to the 2006 census. Beef farming is the region’s dominant form of farming. The Kawartha Lakes boasts the highest number of beef cows in central Ontario and the fourth largest number of beef cows in Ontario. Indeed, there are over 1900 beef cattle in the region. And the Kawarthas has become widely recognized for the cattle it produces.
Statistics aside, the cows help to make a car trip in the Kawarthas a more colourful event, and may even inspire a chuckle.
