Can dogs drink from a lake?

Many dogs love the water, and it’s fun to take them out for a day at the lake! There are, however, significant risks when letting your dog lap up that lake water. Bacteria, such as E.coli could cause diarrhea and Leptospira could be worse. If swallowed, algae can cause health problems in dogs. They can pick up parasites in the water or possibly chemicals. The water in Kawartha Lakes should not cause too much of a concern, but bring a bowl of fresh water just to be safe. “If you wouldn’t drink the water, it’s probably not safe for your dog to drink either.”
