Doors Open Invites You to Tour Southern Kawartha Lakes

Date: 09/08/2015
On September 13 much of that history will be on display and open to the public as part of the Ontario Heritage Trust’s annual Doors Open event. “Doors Open is a celebration in every sense,” said Laurie McCarthy, tourism development officer for the city. “Not only is it a chance to reflect on the past and highlight what makes Kawartha Lakes so exceptional, but it’s an opportunity to pause and explore our surroundings.” This year’s event will focus on ten historical and cultural sites in the southern portion of Kawartha Lakes centered around Pontypool. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. residents and visitors will have an opportunity to visit the following: • Ballyduff Presbyterian Church built in 1853 in Gothic Revival style • The old Bethany post office built in 1875 • Fleetwood Creek Natural Area • Lotus Mill built in 1845 • The Octagonal House built in 1854 • One of only 78 remaining octagonal homes in North America • The Pontypool grain elevator “This year we’ve curated a collection of venues that will offer plenty of interesting perspectives on the architecture of our past, present and future,” said Ms. McCarthy. The Pontypool Community Centre, originally the local school, will also feature the fascinating history of the Pontypool area as a summer destination for Toronto’s Jewish community from the early 1900s to the 1960s. “Part of what makes this annual event great is that there is no cost to visit any of the venues. And it provides an opportunity for the public to go behind the scenes of many places not generally accessible to the public,” explained Ms. McCarthy.
