Dan Wilmore is a backcountry warden that oversees an area of Algonquin Provincial Park that has 50 lakes. He’s in charge of rescues, park visitor education, and issuing tickets. He loves this area and believes it can transform people.
“People drive up from the city, and I can see that they’re stressed out,” he says. “They want their permit as soon as possible and they need to get in there as soon as possible. And then I see them after their trip, after they come out, and there’s just a glow. They have this aura — they’re totally relaxed and everything else is gone. It’s part of human nature, I think — the need to be in nature.”
If you’re thinking about visiting Algonquin Provincial Park, do your research and make sure you have the right gear. There are canoe rentals available late April to November, but be prepared for blackflies during late May to late June.
Dan Willmore relishes role protecting this important stretch of wilderness and seeing it transform people from as far away as Asia or as close as Toronto.
