The official statement said, "This is not the outcome that anyone wanted. Dispatching an animal is always a difficult decision. I assure you that all options to save the elk’s life were considered and that euthanizing wild animals is always a last resort." They also said that the elk was moving closer to a wild population and could have compromised the wild herd's health.
