Warm Up to February with Winterlude in the Kawarthas

Date: 02/11/2014

Make the most of winter by joining in on the following activities at any time throughout the day:

  • Don a pair of snowshoes and make tracks through the thick snow. Twelve pairs of snowshoes will be available at the Gamiing Nature Centre for anyone who would like to use them.
  • Mount a sled and toboggan down a hill blanketed with fresh snow.
  • Experience the novelty of ice fishing on Pigeon Lake. A few holes will be drilled on the lake before you arrive. Bring your own fishing gear or borrow some from the centre.
  • Cross-country ski on this scenic 100-acre parcel of land. A few pairs of skis will be available at the centre.
  • Play tracking bingo, a fun way to learn how to identify different animal tracks.
  • Make a snowman and share a photo of your frosty creation with the Gamiing Nature Centre on Facebook.
  • Enjoy the crackle and toasty allure of a bonfire. Warm up near the fire with a bowl of hearty chili and a cup of steaming hot cocoa.
  • Join in on this celebration of winter at the Gamiing Nature Centre, which is located at 1884 Pigeon Lake Road in Lindsay. Admission is by donation. For details, please visit www.gamiing.org.

About the Gamiing Nature Centre

The Gamiing Nature Centre (pronounced gaa'-min-j) is located on the western shore of Pigeon Lake. Gamiing is a grassroots not-for-profit organization, which was founded in 1995 by Mieke Schippper, volunteer executive director. Gamiing means 'at the shore' in Ojibwa. The organization chose the name to honour the land's first inhabitants and their lakeshore location. Gamiing provides environmental education and hands-on demonstrations of ecologically sound practices associated with lakes and lakeshores. Gamiing works with individuals, community groups, and other interested parties to foster practices that balance human needs with the needs of wildlife and natural lake ecosystems. Gamiing also operates a fully-stocked nursery, which sells plants native to Southern Ontario within a 150 kilometre radius of Pigeon Lake. The organization is also dedicated to conserving wildlife along the shores of Pigeon Lake. In association with the Trent-Severn Waterway, Gamiing helped to restore habitat for the threatened Blanding's turtle.
