When a cottage is your safe place

A cottage can go through a lot of changes through the years, but that doesn't change its story or where it came from. For most of Larry's childhood, his grandparents' cottage was unfinished. He remembers the bare studs on the wall and the water from a hand pump. In some ways, though, those unfinished parts added to its charm and sit vividly in his memories. Even though it has been updated and redone, the memories remain. "To me, all the charm of that little cottage is gone forever, but I know that under the new drywall are the nails Grandpa hammered into the old studs that once stood bare." What memories will your grandchildren have of your cottage?

"The cottage" become a hallowed, safe place

When I was very young, I would go with my grandparents on the weekends to what they called the “cottage.” I remember riding on a dirt road just outside Stillwater. It seemed a long way from Woodbury, where my grandparents lived, and the ride felt like it took forever to get there.
